iceburn zu split

ICEBURN / ZU with Xabier Iriondo 10" PhonoMetak series #01

Its funny how history is so easily twisted. Often we hear the response before we hear the initial statement. This is the final release in Iceburn's decade long arc. It was recorded in early 2001 and originally intended to be released on Southern Lord Records (home to such legends as Sunn 0))), Khanate, Boris...) to be part of their special 7" series. Hence the doom influenced mood and the girthy riffs in the bristly title track Odin's Beard. Greg Anderson (see Iceburn/Engine Kid connection) was keen to the task but there was a financial crunch and for one reason or another it was never released on Southern Lord much to the dismay of all involved. Some how it fell into the hands of some fellows in Italy who felt strongly that this music needed to be heard. At first it was to be a picture 10" with some amazing art by Sri Whipple (aka American Dick). Then the idea was proposed to make it a split with the Italian outfit Zu. Originally influnced by and travelling a similar path as the Iceburn Collective, Zu had taken up and continue to carry the torch of hardcore/free-jazz/music all over the world. Actually, it was Massimo from Zu who first got a CDR copy of the Iceburn recordings and presented it to Mirko of Wallace records. The Zu side of the split was recorded in early 2006 in collaboration with Xabier Iriondo and finally released later that year on Wallace Records' PhonoMetakSeries. Here we have Iceburn's final statement, as they cross into musical valhalla, and Zu's response. It is a fitting response to those recordings of 5 years previous. Sonic elements from Iceburn's doomy dirges are given new life, and the torch is passed.

History is not water,

even if it were.

We see the ripples

not the stone.

We see the effects

and the cause is lost.

Or is it?

Hope

is an anchor.
